  • Well Isn’t This Ironic?

Alanis Morisette dominated the radio waves in the 90s and ignited a wave of disgruntled high school English teachers who attempted to explain her misuse of the word “ironic.” These days, she’s lending her talents to Marianne Williamson, an Independent Congressional candidate from California.

Her new song “Today,” is a call to “start a revolution, awaken from this frozen [and] start the mending of our union.” It’s not exactly the pop sensation that got us all singing along in 1996, but it has had more than 34,000 hits on YouTube.

The influence of music in campaigning dates back to the 1840 Presidential campaign between William Henry Harrison and Democrat incumbent Martin Van Buren. That campaign birthed the classic “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” (http://rtvote.com/1sa8pw3 - jam out to this, why donthca?) which has been called the “I Want to Hold Your Hand” of campaign music.

It’s hard to predict how influential Alanis Morisette’s endorsement will be for Williamson’s campaign. But in the meantime, we now have “Today” stuck in our heads.
