The new Miss USA, Nia Sanchez, proved pageants aren’t all glitter and glamour after being crowned last night, June 8, 2014.
The Nevada representative is an expert in self-defense and earned a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo. After living with her mother in a women’s shelter when she was young, Sanchez decided to devote her time to learning how to protect herself.
At the 63rd annual Miss USA competition Sanchez won over the judges by speaking about how important it is for women to learn self-defense in a time where nearly 20% of all undergraduate women will be sexually assaulted.
The Miss Universe competition, which includes Miss USA, partnered with Rock the Vote in 2012 to engage young voters through PSAs and registering voters.
Sanchez will go onto to represent the USA in the Miss Universe competition where she will continue to advocate for women’s empowerment and to share her passion for martial arts.
Congratulations Nia, from all of us here at Rock the Vote.
